Well, here we go again. It should be an interesting season. I think the Astros will have enough hitting to win a playoff spot if they can stop their opponents from scoring a lot of runs. That could be a problem for any team in any season, but I think the ‘Stros will be more vulnerable in this area than they have been in recent years. I’ve been wrong before and hope to be wrong again on this count.
As far as having a little fun on this site, I can just about guarantee it. The Baseball Library and Trivia contest are back. Take a daily trip down memory lane with plenty of bells and whistles on the Baseball Library. Click on it and check it out. I hope you play the trivia game too. A prize will be given away to whatever right answer the computer randomly selects each day and the prizes will be good ones from Sports Collectibles of Houston, just like last year. At the end of the season, we will randomly select a grand prize winner from all winners. Last year the grand prize was dinner for four with my wife Judy and I at the State Grille with a bottle of Opus 1 wine if the winner is from the Houston area. If not, it will be a prize of equal value. Last year’s winner was Larry Slocki of Laurel, Mississippi. Larry won a signed, framed, limited edition poster of Nolan Ryan. This year's prize will be the same.
I will be answering at least one question every week about the Astros or baseball in general on “Ask Larry.” Just click the icon and you will see the current question and answer, and be able to ask your own question. I may not answer them all, but will certainly respond to the topical issues that come up as the season moves along.
A new “off the wall” feature should be fun for those of you who have favorite players from the past you would like to recognize. The idea came off the wall literally – the wall of the unisex bathroom in the old press box at Wrigley Field. At some point, someone started this chain game of graffiti with: Bring back Hobie Landrith. Under Landrith’s name, someone else wrote Eddie Watikus or someone like that. Over the years, until the Cubs moved the press box upstairs and installed luxury boxes, the list grew to 100 or so names. I think we can beat them. I’ve started it by soliciting names from a couple of friends. The rest is up to you. Just fill in your name and that of your player and your selection will be added to the list. So join the “wall of fame” and post your selection to Bring Back.
Finally, I have posted my calendar for April and will keep it updated, month by month, so that if you want to say hello and get something signed, you can catch me at Larry’s Big Bamboo at Minute Maid Park or elsewhere. I hope to meet as many of you as possible, starting on opening day, April 2, and on through the season.
